Introduction

The Halsrud’s of the United States are pretty much all related to each other.  In the late 1800’s, members of a Norwegian family came to the U.S. primarily to Bode, Iowa.  This family originated from the Norwegian area around Dokka, Nordre Land, Oppland, Norway in mostly the Nordsinni and Østsinni areas.

In the mid-19th century, Halsrud farm members, located near Dokka, began to come to the United States.

The Halsrud farms (there are actually two parcels, Søndre (Southern) and Nordre(Northern)) are located a few kilometers east of Dokka and slightly east of Volstad in Nordre Land, Østsinni parish.

Below, on the left, is a picture of the barn on the farm, house has burned down, taken in April 2008:

The Halsrud farms originated from the Komperud holding which came from the Gaarder holding.

Local farm cemetery - a lot of decendents are buried at the Vølstad Kirke cemetery, which is about 1 Km west from the farm area.

In 1867, Kristoffer Olsen (Born 18 Jul 1840 Larsstuen, Nordsinni, Nordre Land, Oppland, http://www.gurihus.net/slekt/tng/getperson.php?personID=I11541&tree=DG, Died 23 Jun 1919 Bode, Iowa, USA) and his wife Inger Hansdatter (Born 13 Apr 1842 Bjørnslien, Nordsinni, Nordre Land, Oppland, http://www.gurihus.net/slekt/tng/getperson.php?personID=I7049&tree=DG, http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste_e.aspx?ft=1865&knr=0536&kenr=001&bnr=0031&lnr=000) were married and came from Dokka to Rock County, Wisconsin. In 1870 they moved near Bode.

These two people are the father and mother of Maria Olson, born in Bode, that eventually marries Olaf Eriksen.

Emigration records for Kristoffer Olsen and Inger Hansdatter are here: under-investigation having difficulty finding https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/search/persons/advanced?from=&to=&sc%5B%5D=em&firstname=inger&lastname=hansdatter&birth_year_from=&birth_year_to=&birth_date=&birth_place=&domicile=&position=&event_year_from=&event_year_to=&event_date=&related_first_name=&related_last_name=&related_birth_year=&sort=ed

In 1873, Hans Andreas Olsen, born to Ole Rundhaug and Inge Mathea near Dokka, came to West Paint Creek, Iowa.  Hans is the first known Halsrud farm family member to immigrate to the U.S.

In 1881, Ole Chrisofferson Larsstuen came to the US with son O.M. Olson and wifel Malene, and their two daughters Olave and Beata. They came to the home of Christopher Olson. Ole Chrisofferson and wife were the paretns of Hans Andreas Olson, Chrisopterh Olson, and Martin Olson.

In 1883 Syverinne Amundsdatter, Hans Andreas Olsen's future wife, left the Dokka area bound for Bode.

In 1891, Olaf Eriksen, (https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/census/person/pf01052103001790, https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/8/pe00000000474301), Hans' nephew, came to Bode from Dokka via Oslo. Note the Norwegian Digital Archive site does not have a scanned copy of the list, as of June 2018, just the entry in the database per the link. Also note that they have his name as Oalf instead of Olaf, in case you search for him. (Need to put US entry here from below).

In 1894, Olaf's mother Agnete Olsdatter, http://www.gurihus.net/slekt/tng/getperson.php?personID=I13026&tree=DG, step-father Peter Hansen, children (Hans P., Inga, Peter, and Margrethe), and two other farm members (Marthe O. and Marie) came to Bode from Dokka.

Family members typically adopted "Halsrud" as their last name in the U.S., some kept the same last names and some spellings changed.  Other spellings you may see are:  current Norwegian name used "Haldsrud" and other variants included "Halserud" and "Hallsrud."

If you know of another family member that emigrated, please contact the author at the above email address.

Hans Andreas Olsen, who is Olaf E.'s uncle on his mother's side, at age 21, registered to leave Oslo on June 6th, 1873 on the ship Oder bound for Lansing, Iowa.

The Norwegian digital archive for emigration shows the following data:  http://digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=6&filnamn=EMIOSLO&medbilete=&sokpostnr=21#a0

It looks like the S/S Oder went to Hull, England.  And, then people made it across England to Liverpool on the way to the U.S.:  http://www.norwayheritage.com/t_corresp.asp?id=542

This leaves two options for the transatlantic journey arriving in either New York or Quebec.

The author could not find any passenger list entry or immigration data for Hans Adreas Olsen.

1910 Iowa census - Han Andreas Olsen, 58, is listed as Hans Halsrud, wife Severine (Syverinne Amunds. Dokkesveen), age 69, mother of one, still living - looks like she emmigrated in 1882 from Norway.  Living Iowa, Humboldt, Delana, District 142.

http://search.ancestry.com/iexec/?htx=View&r=an&dbid=7884&iid=IAT624_406-0371&fn=Hans&ln=Halsrud&st=r&ssrc=&pid=7363703

Syverinne, age 37 registered for emigration from Kristiania (Oslo) May 10, 1883 travel date May 11, 1883, on the ship Rollo.  Norwegian digital archive shows entry:  http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=14&filnamn=emikra1&gardpostnr=67231&sokefelt=skjul

Looks like she also came with a Anne Amunds., age 7.  And, a few other peole from the Dokka area were registered for the same trip.

The S/S Rollo was targetted to go to Hull, England.    Connections to America were then available in Liverpool to a number of destinations in the U.S.

The author needs to look for port entries for the New York, Quebec, etc. still.

The author needs to look for Syverine in the 1885 census using her Norwegian maiden last name.

There is a Severina Halsrnd, on ancestry.com, in the 1895 Iowa State Census for Iowa->Humboldt->Waucousta.  No image available.  Also, Hans, age 43, is listed here with last name Halsrnd.   Anna also, age 18, but in Humboldt->Luermore.  No images, but misspellings for Halyr??s listings for other family members.  No images for some reason on ancestry.com.

Iowa State Census for 1905 contains Hans and Severnie on 1905->Humboldt->Bode->page 1.  Ancestry.com denotes name as Halserud, though.

Olaf E Halsrud, age of 18 and a laborer, rode the S/S Hecla(2) on the Thingvalla Line from Christiania (Oslo's old name) departing 1891, May 14th, and arriving in New York, 1891, May 29th.

Norwegian emigration archive of Olaf Eriksen leaving Oslo is denoted here.

Note that Olaf likely didn't come through Ellis Island.  Ellis Island open January 1st, 1892.  The Castle Garden entry point was used before this date.  www.castlegarden.org - an attempt to find Olaf's entry has been attempted here, but with no luck.   An article denoted that some records were burned during transport to Ellis Island in 1897 in the New York Times, so maybe his was destroyed.

Ship arrivals reported in Norwegian newspapers for May 1891 are located here.

***Put in image205 showing Olaf's passenger ship entry for New York.***

The Hecla(2)'s ship picture.

Olaf Eriksen married Helena Marie Olson, born in Iowa, 1874-1950, daughter of Christopher and Inger Sorlien Olson.  They married in 1900.  Live in Wacousta township for 6 years.  Family born Irene, 1901-1944; Cordelia, 1902-1978; Luella, 1905-1909; Marcella, 1908-; Lydia, 1911-1981; Melbourne, 1915-; Carlisle, 1917-.  Olaf and Helena lived near Bode after moving from Wacousta.

From the Norwegian emmigration archive, here is Agnette, Peter, both age 41, and family coming over in 1894, April 24th out of Oslo on the S/S Baumwall (Bamvall) ship.  Note that they headed and arrived in Quebec as a first step on May 8th or 9th.   Other farm members denoted are Marthe O. Halserud and Marie Halserud.  Other family members included are Hans P. Hansen, Inga Hansen, Peter Hansen, and Margrethe Hansen.   Bode entinnial book says "Bauman Sep" Scandinavian Line arriving in Detroit June of 1894.

The archive listing is here.

The ships listing is here. http://www.norwayheritage.com/t_transatlantic.asp?month=05&year=1894&Submit=Submit

The family members entered Canada via Quebec on May 9th, 1894.  Data can be found here.

Note that everyone didn’t use the same last name as above when leaving Norway.  Data is here.

Bode Centinnial book mentions the family entered the U.S. in Detroit.

Hans Michelsen from Grandgaard in Gaarder in Census 1801 _might_ be her father,- he is unmarried here, but there are other Hans Michelsen too in Land in 1801-Census, so you have to find out which one of them got married and moved to Komperud.

Olaf Eriksen Halsrud

Picture of Olaf Eriksen Halsrud below from Bode, Iowa, Centennial Book:p />

The birth/baptismal record for Olaf Eriksen can be found on LDS microfilm #1282582, in Bok 2 of minister's records for Nordre Land. That record is also in the online scanned collection at the Digitalarkivet -- Oppland fylke, Nordre Land, Ministerialbok nr. 2 (1872-1881). The birth/baptismal record for Olaf Eriksen indicates that his parents were NOT married, in fact neither parent has ever been married as of 1 Dec 1872. The father being Erik Olsen Elton, born 1853 (about 1855). The Elton farm is up the road to the NorthEast from Halsrud farm less than 10km.]

Olaf Eriksen's Father Erik Olsen From Elton Farm

No one seems to know what happened to Olaf Eriksen's father.  It seems that no one can find any information about death in Norway nor immigration to the U.S.  If you have any information, please notify the author.

A possible lead?  -- A letter from June :

Hello, I am still following up on information I discovered from my trip to England. Also friends and relatives wanted me to do research on their families so I'm working on that too.Thank you for reminding me about Erik's death certificate. British death certificates are pretty useless when it comes to family history research. Name, date, place, and ailment. No relatives are mentioned at all. The U.S have a lot more information but it often isn't accurate and sends one after red herrings! Marcella Halsrud some years ago told me that her grandfather had been sent overseas to buy land in the U.S. (To prevent him from marrying Agnet.) On the way he had to change ships in Liverpool and died there. I searched the index on Freebmd.com and found no Olsons, no Julsens and no Eltons. The only Olsen that fit the age and place was an Ole Olsen. "Ole" may have been used by him as a nickname or that was what was all that was known of him if he was delirious. I have a copy of his death certificate which I obtained from the "General Register Office, London".  Since the scanner won't scan the complete certificate, I made a copy of each end.  You can print out the files which are in a *.jpg format and tape them together to have a complete photo of the death certificate.June (Phone number:  <phone # deleted>, Florence, Oregon)

Oslo’s city name was Kristiania from the late 1800s to 1924. In 1900, people living on the Halsrud farm are denoted below.  Note that the name is spelled Halserud in the document.

Some Farm Details

It seem that the either the Halsrud name not was official before after 1865 or just forgotten in the book from Land, Ole Olsen Halsrud in the 1901 census on Halsrud Nordre is Agnetes brother in the 1865 census, he took over the farm.”

“Looking at the Landno / Titleno (Gnr/Bnr) for the area, Halsrud looks to be small holding/farm under the main farm Komperud. I could not find Komperud in the 1801 census, but the farm would have been located in Lands parish, under Gaarder Annex (sub-parish). There are only 19 farms registered there, and one of them are called Ruud. Could that be Komperud?”

The first sentence refers to the size of the farm, how much of the land that is cultivated and how much wood it has. Then it says: The main house was built in 1867, the outhouse in 1952 and the stabbur in 1859. Fire tax 16 000 kr. – 1 horse, 2 cows, 1 young animal (probably a calf or a young bull), 1 pig, 5 sheep, 10 hens. -  The farm has been in the family since 1810, when it was bought by Ole Hansen. The owner bought the farm from his grandfather, Johannes Haldsrud, in 1943. He (the owner) has cultivated some more land and built a new outhouse.span lang="EN-GB">Owner: Ragnar Haldsrud born (b.) 1915, he is the son of Ole J. Haldsrud and Agathe Røbersæter (maiden name) – In 1935 Ragnar married Hansine Vaslien. Their children are: Odd b. 1938, Astrid b. 1938, Reidun b. 1941, Leif Håkon b. 1952. – The owner is a driver.

This farm, Haldsrud søndre, is no longer in the family. In 1997 it was sold to a man called Johannes Østensen, he lives there now. I will give you his address and the address of two of  Ragnar Halsruds children that live here in Dokka.

The address to the Haldsrud Nordre farm is Oddbjørn Haldsrud & Arne Haldsrud (owners), Rute 531 Østsinni, 2870 Dokka.

Notes Mikkelsen from the farm Granngard, married to Marte Gulbrandsdatter, and they lived on Haldsrud from about 1812. They got a contract for living on Haldsrud in 1818. Inger Mateas brother Ole was the first farmer on søndre Haldsrud. In case I have guessed correct, I need more informations to my book. Can you send me informations about your family. You only wrote that they came to USA "in 1873, 1892 and 1893". I have a son Hans Andreas Olsen, born in 1851, that one source tells that he emigrated in 1873 and another in 1880. Then his sister Matea Olsdatter emigrated in 1894 according to one information. I have no further informations about the three eldest children in the family: Ole Andreas born in 1843, Helene in 1846 and Agnete in 1848 - anyone of them emigrated? Svein-Erik Ødegaard

Olaf E. Halsrud's family is in 1925 Iowa State census (Iowa->Humboldt->Delana->page 22).  No parents specified in the parent name/age section!   Ancestry.com misspelled there name as Holarud, Holsrud, and Holsrud:   http://search.ancestry.com/Browse/View.aspx?dbid=1084&path=1925.Humboldt.Delana.22

Lydia Halsrud and Adalbert Theesfeld's wedding announcement in Bode newspaper - gotta love they were "prominent farmers" :  http://bodepl.newspaperarchive.com/PdfViewer.aspx?img=143251691&firstvisit=true&src=search&currentResult=0&currentPage=0   Adalbert was working with "Rawleigh products" and living in LuVerne.

Syrene Amundsdatter, 37 years old, who emigrated 1883 was actually born March 10 1841 and baptized Severine on April 18, see #65.
When she was confirmed in 1856 she was called Syverine, see #11.
She was born when the parents were at Lie-ejet (Lidseie), parents obviously moved to Dokkesveen later.
It was Severines mother who came from Liedseiet, see the marriage #16. Her father came from Komperud.

Definition: “hals” means “neck” as in “neck of a hill” – “rud” means “to clear land.”

Theesfeld (who married a Halsrud in Iowa)

The first one of the Theesfelds for our family to come was Adalbert Theesfeld: http to Theesfeld

Adalbert Theesfeld, age 19, born in Altharlingersiel, clerk, German, Emden, father Johannes Theesfeld in Emden, ZW. D.B. Maerkten 1.   Heading to Beatrice Nebraska to see Uncle Peter H. Parde in Adams Nebraska.

Looks like the uncle is married to a Henriette Theesfeld.  Search for Parde on EllisIsland.org in about 1921 (note middle name incorrect but manifest correct).

Going to Beatrice Nebraska.

See line 25 below. Paid by uncle, Peter H. Parde, in Adams, Nebraska

Family member says:

After searching I found some of those photo's of your grandfather when he first came here.

The records from Ellis Island show that he came here from Germany with $25.00 in his pocket

in 1923 on board the  USS George Washington at the age of 19 with the fare paid by his sponser,

an uncle in Nebraska. Whom I never heard of.

I thought you might find some of these interesting so I scanned all. I don't know the details of some of these.

I might should have shrunk some 1st...sorry

Also there is another record showing him traveling in 1929 from Breman to New York with his named

spelled differently.

Later~Barry  Also, I am looking at one of my fathers’ forms for the service.  He mentions the following information about relatives – any ring a bell?
Father, Adalbert W R Theesfeld – born 20, Jun 1903 - >>>place of birth Altharlingersiel, Germany
Uncle, Reinhard Zuectig, Hamburg
Aunt, Christa Zuectic, Hamburg
Aunt, Ella Kurth, Hamburg
Uncle, Wilhelm Theesfeld
ostenholz @ UE Walsrode W…  -- I think this guy was a radio operator in the war, I have a picture of that.
Uncle, Hans Fulfs, Emden
Cousin, Hansi Fulfs, Emden
Here is location of where Adalbert was from:     Zwischen Beiden Märkten 1 , 26721 Emden, Germany
That's Will. on the left aboard the Washington

 Will.'s on the right

I do know that after Will became a citizen he was in the Army.

This was with his photo's, someone named Herman Theesfeld Oct. 1923

This was Will.'s.

This is the ship's passenger booklet from 1929.

This is the page from the above booklet showing his name on the ships list...spelled diferently.

One of the later relatives coming in.
